With Cable Poised To Take $6.9 Bil. Bite Out of Telecom By 2009 Kagan's Upcoming Summit

10 February 2005

Telephone services will be the next significant revenue engine for the cable industry generating a projected $6.9 bil. in annual sales by 2009, say Kagan Research analysts. With IP phone services available to broad tracts of cable customers, Kagan's upcoming third annual Cable VoIP Summit looms large as a forum for influential cable leaders from Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, Mediacom and others set to gather for a timely discussion about cable's promising new stake in providing low-cost, high-quality phone services to their high-speed Internet-connected customer base.

After accelerating their footprint expansions, U.S. cable operators are focusing on grabbing customers from telecom incumbents. Cable's installed customer base gives the industry a distinct edge in offering IP voice services. For example, Comcast has plans to deploy IP voice across its entire 40 mil. home footprint over the next two years. Bullish on consumer acceptance of an IP-based voice service, Comcast predicts a 20% penetration of homes passed, or 8 mil. subscribers, in a mere five years.

Hosted by Kagan Research, an independent analyst firm tracking emerging media businesses, the Kagan Cable VoIP Summit, April 27 at the Park Lane in New York, will feature top industry speakers, including:

Back-to-back Kagan Events:
On Thursday, April 28, Kagan will be hosting the Video Competition Conference, a four-way face off between Cable vs. Satellite vs. Telco vs. Internet for the right to dominate the delivery of movie and TV programming via emerging technology and devices. The Kagan Video Competition Conference will examine the advantages and disadvantages of various video content channels and tiers, deployment capacities among competitors, marketing plans, anticipated advertising revenues, pricing targets and distribution obstacles.
