Veraz and Sun Microsystems Collaborate on Showcasing Solaris 10 on Veraz's Next Generation Telecommunications

23 June 2005

Veraz Networks announced its collaboration with Sun Microsystems to adopt the Solaris 10 Operating System for its next generation ControlSwitch product. This was an easy decision for Veraz due to Solaris 10's compatibility with previous releases of Solaris. As a first step in this collaboration Veraz has started testing Solaris(TM) 10's advanced telecom features including Solaris Containers, Predictive Self Healing, Dynamic Tracing (DTrace), using Veraz's carrier grade softswitch and service delivery platform ControlSwitch. This furthers Veraz and Sun's on-going relationship of successful ControlSwitch deployments in the telco space for over five years. This collaboration will provide both established and greenfield carrier providers with the benchmark next generation softswitch implementation.

Due to its modularity which enables flexible deployment configurations and granular scalability, ControlSwitch leverages the full range of Sun computing platforms and provides an ideal architecture for utilizing Solaris 10 Container capabilities. Nearly a dozen distinct software elements including session control elements that map to functional IMS components are deployed across multiple SUN servers makes up a distributed ControlSwitch system. Solaris Containers can increase the flexibility of ControlSwitch software element deployment combinations and thus facilitate network planning, design, and network and service traffic expansion.

The large scale of Veraz's real-time telephony system will prove out Solaris 10's new performance optimization and monitoring features such as DTrace. DTrace simplifies performance analysis in live network deployments, enhancing the ability of development and customer service support teams to ensure operation at peak performance with consistent server performance measurements in both the lab and in live networks.

Solaris 10's Predictive Self Healing features will provide additional benefits to avoid server hardware component irregularities and failures from affecting application level availability. These will be tested alongside the self-healing capabilities that are already implemented within the ControlSwitch at application level.

"Veraz's ControlSwitch product is a great example of a field tested and proven solution that can fully benefit from the carrier-grade features of Solaris 10," said Tom Goguen, Vice President, Operating Platforms Group, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "By combining the carrier grade architecture of ControlSwitch with the carrier grade Solaris OS, our joint customers benefit from next-generation solutions tailored to meet telco business objectives."

"Sun is a leader in carrier grade telecommunications infrastructure equipment due to its outstanding reputation for reliability," said R. Paul Singh, Vice President of Business Development at Veraz Networks. "We are excited about the new unique features in Solaris 10 and look forward to validating them and making these available to our customers."

Recently the two companies made available a success story highlighting the compelling benefits of migrating traditional switched voice networks to service-rich VoIP networks utilizing the Veraz ControlSwitch operating on SUN Netra platforms. To view the case study, please go to www.sun.com/netra.

Veraz ControlSwitch platform offers a true softswitch design that eliminates the use of proprietary hardware designs prevalent in other telco switch architectures. Veraz's field-proven platform is carrying over a billion minutes of traffic per month on Sun platforms.
