Uniden Announces National Retail Partnerships for the Packet8-Enabled Consumer VoIP Phone

6 June 2005

Uniden America Corporation, a leading manufacturer of wireless consumer electronics, today announced that the Packet-8 enabled UIP1868P, a fully integrated, service-ready whole house VoIP phone system, will be available nationwide at several retailers this year including Fry's, OfficeMax, Costco.com and Amazon.com. This is the first national distribution rollout for this new product, which is on display at SuperComm 2005, June 6-9, at The McCormick Place Complex in Chicago at the 8x8, Inc. booth #13039.

Fry's, Costco.com and Amazon.com will begin offering the product in July of this year. The UIP1868P will also be available at OfficeMax.com in July and available in all OfficeMax store locations in September.

The Packet8-enabled UIP1868P is a 5.8GHz digital expandable corded/cordless phone with built-in VoIP technology and full router functionality. The UIP1868P is expandable with up to ten cordless handsets, deploying VoIP capability to each handset using a single broadband Internet connection. Incorporating 8x8's patented Internet telephony software, the UIP1868P offers plug-and-play access to Packet8's feature-rich broadband telephone service.

"Uniden is pleased to announce national retail relationships with Fry's, OfficeMax and Amazon.com in order to deliver this high-quality, cost-effective product to consumers and small-business owners," said Brett Morrison, national sales manager in charge of IP products and business communications at Uniden. "Customers visiting these retail outlets will be able to view the extended features of the new UIP1868P first-hand to better understand the ease-of-use offered by this product."

Uniden's UIP1868P is compatible with Uniden's TCX800, TCX400, TCX440, CLX500 and ELT560 flip-design phone accessory cordless handsets. The unit also offers features such as call waiting, caller ID, handset speakerphone, four-way conferencing, call transfer between handsets, DirectLink(TM) two-way radio capability and a "do not disturb" setting.

The Packet8 residential broadband phone service, introduced in November 2002, offers unlimited local and long distance calling to the U.S. and Canada for $19.95 per month and includes calling features such as voicemail, call waiting, caller ID, local number portability (LNP), unlimited in-network calling, directory assistance ($.75 per call), call forwarding and call blocking. For a small monthly charge, Packet8 subscribers can add toll free and virtual numbers as well as E911 support. Packet8 remains the only major VoIP provider to offer true, replacement E911 service which automatically routes calls and computer-based "screen pops" of caller information to emergency personnel at local Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs).

"The Uniden/Packet8 residential VoIP phone system brings internet phone service to the next level in functionality and ease of use," said 8x8 Vice President of Sales & Marketing Huw Rees. "Consumers who have been waiting for a simple approach to making broadband phone service available throughout their home or office will find an excellent solution with this fully integrated device."
