Telular Combines Alarm Communications and E911 Service for VoIP Installations14 June 2005
Telular Corporation (Nasdaq: WRLS - News) today announced the latest in cellular alarm security to provide Enhanced-911 (E-911) services in response to the growing market demand for Voice-over-IP (VoIP). With Telular's patented technology, the Telguard® Digital model TG-8 provides E-911 calling to emergency services and transmits alarm signals to monitoring stations over next-generation GSM digital cellular networks. For the VoIP user who does not have wireline phone service, Telguard TG-8 is an ideal primary alarm transmission solution for homes or businesses within the cellular network coverage area. As a back-up alarm communicator in a traditional installation, the TG-8 will transmit alarm signals automatically over the cellular network should the telephone line connection to an alarm system become disrupted or compromised.
"VoIP adoption is spreading rapidly. However, there are real concerns with VoIP's ability to provide E-911 services. Specifically, certain alarm transmissions may not pass through the broadband VoIP connection; improperly wired installations can unintentionally disable the security system; and some VoIP providers do not have a direct link to emergency services. The TG-8 is designed to address these issues," said George Brody, senior vice president of Telular's Telguard division.
Advancing beyond the functionality of wireline alarm transmission, the Telguard TG-8 enables both E-911 emergency calls and alarm signal transmissions to occur simultaneously via the cellular network. Telguard Digital offers full-data reporting and an automatic self-test feature for complete and reliable alarm transmission. The TG-8 model has recently achieved Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listings, the first in the industry for any digital cellular alarm system, which makes it highly suitable for the most demanding security applications.
"While Telguard cellular systems have been deployed by many commercial entities and residential users as a backup alarm device, we believe the compatibility and complementary nature of TG-8 for VoIP subscribers will drive the importance of fixed cellular alarm systems within the security and telecommunications industries," said Brody. "At Telguard, we are actively working with the Alarm Industry Communications Council, Security Industry Association, National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association, and security and VoIP service providers to discuss and resolve the issues of alarm transmission connections for VoIP users," added Brody.
Currently, financial institutions, retail outlets, commercial facilities, government agencies, and residences use Telguard products across the U.S. Telguard products are available from leading professional security companies, including alarm dealers, system integrators, and fire/life safety companies. Telular's full product range covers cellular alarm signaling for both primary and secondary communications, as well as the use of cellular to transmit voice, fax, and data, and to back up an existing telephone system.
