Telco Systems Introduces New Access241 VoIP Analog Telephone Adapter with Enhanced

8 March 2005

Telco Systems, headquartered in Foxboro, Massachusetts, today at the VON show here (Booth 1435) introduced the Access241, a new advanced VoIP Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) designed to integrate traditional telephone service and VoIP phone service over a single telephone for enhanced calling capabilities and to facilitate home and small office networking.

"These features set the Access241 apart from all other VoIP ATAs and further builds on Telco Systems' market strategy to deliver ATAs that provide superior voice quality, performance and functionality," said Larry Asten, President of Telco Systems.

The new Access241, which adds automated call routing to the Telco Systems ATA product line, enables subscribers to receive calls from both their VoIP and traditional phone services via a single phone. For instance, during an active VoIP call, if another call comes in on their traditional service, a call waiting beep indicates an incoming call, and a standard flash-hook enables the user to switch between calls. In addition, a push of a button on the phone dial pad enables the user to switch between phone services when making a call.

Also as a result of its automated call routing capability, the new Access241 provides enhanced telephony services, such as 911 and user defined call routing. When dialing 911, the emergency call is automatically routed to the traditional phone service to ensure the emergency operator is able to determine the exact location of the emergency. Users can also designate which service to route a call over based on a specific phone number or area code.

In the case of either a VoIP network failure or power outage, the phone switches automatically to the traditional phone service.

IMPROVED NETWORKING

The Access241 further enhances the integrated routing and switch capability of the Access211, which was introduced last March, by adding an additional 3 LAN ports for a total of 4.

This facilitates home networking or small office/home office (SOHO) networking by eliminating the need for an external router, hub or switch. With the additional LAN ports, a network printer as well as additional PCs, laptops, or a wireless access point can be added.

Integrated routing simplifies end-user involvement in VoIP service set-up, while lowering service provider costs because it's fast and simple to install, maintain, and manage. Similarly, the extra LAN ports of the Access241, in conjunction with its integrated routing and switching capabilities, make it easier for a VoIP subscriber to set up a small network in order to share a single broadband Internet connection.

Asten said: "Service Providers have asked us to add these features to enable them to provide additional value and convenience for their subscribers."

Both the Access241 and Access211 provide superior voice quality and performance because of features such as traffic shaping, variable voice compression technology for both phone ports, and other Quality of Service mechanisms.

Traffic shaping ensures that even in cases of heavy Internet data traffic, voice gets the bandwidth required for superior voice quality. Without traffic shaping, voice quality can break up during simultaneous voice and Internet data activity, such as uploading large files such as digital pictures, video, music or e-mails with large attachments.

The variable voice compression feature, which is available in both VoIP phone ports, provides the ability to deliver high-quality voice on both ports when they are being used at the same time. This feature is particularly helpful in the many instances in which the uplink for a broadband Internet service is in the 128-256 Kbps range.

Traffic shaping and voice compression distinguish the Access241 and Access211 from all other VoIP ATAs in their class. Both devices also support SIP, MGCP and H.323 VoIP standards.

Another Quality of Service mechanism supported by the Access241 and Access211, gives the voice signal higher priority over data, which digitally marks the voice signal in a manner that allows it to travel faster and more smoothly over the Internet.

The Access241 and Access211 are members of Telco Systems' Access200 family, which is a diverse line of VoIP ATAs designed for service providers who need to deliver high-quality VoIP, video, and data (triple play) services to their residential and SOHO customers over existing broadband Internet access. The product line offers a cost-efficient means for service providers to migrate their customers' traditional analog telephones and faxes onto IP-based networks.
