Supercomm Survey: Telecom Pros Unsure About Job Market, Citing Industry Consolidation & New Technologies17 June 2005
A special Supercomm edition of the JobSeeker Survey by TelecomCareers.net finds telecom pros split on the health of the current telecom labor market but united in the belief that consolidation of both carriers and equipment vendors, coupled with the rollout of new technologies, have the industry in flux.
Of the 643 respondents to the online survey, 42 percent felt the telecom job market is strong or growing, while 42 percent said it was flat. Fourteen percent felt the market is declining. 53 percent of those polled noted consolidation of carriers and vendors as the number one impact on job opportunities, while about 40 percent cited 'technology innovation' or 'increased demand for broadband lifestyles.' Telecom pros cited new triple play technologies as the number one job opportunity, followed closely by wireless. Consequently, multi-service edge technologies and Wi-Max were noted as the data technologies that had the most buzz at Supercomm.
"When you look at the big picture, the results are mixed," said Quinn Jones, president of TelecomCareers.net. "What your skills are and where you fit in the changing telecom landscape really drives how you see the opportunities available."
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services are a case in point. Nearly 4 percent of the respondents wrote in VoIP as the biggest buzz technology at the show, but as a whole, the group split as to the immediate impact of VoIP on the competitive landscape. 34 percent felt VoIP was about to become a mainstream offering, while 23 percent felt it was overhyped. Another 20 percent felt that VoIP is just becoming a real competitive option, while the remaining 20 percent think it's 'too early to tell.'
"You could look at the response around VoIP as a small example of this flux," said Jones. "While most people get the fact that it's coming, it's unclear what the overall business, and therefore the jobs outlook, will look like. Same thing with triple play offerings from incumbents. Smart move, possible with new technologies, but what kind of market will be there? Everyone's hedging, looking for the best potential move."
Other results from the survey include:
* Verizon was named as the best telecom company to work for, garnering more than double the votes from the next leading company. (Following up on Verizon Wireless being named best wireless company to work for in the CTIA show survey released by TelecomCareers.net in March.) * The West/Southwest was cited as the top area of the country for telecom job growth. * Cost was cited as the key driver of successful VoIP service offering.
