SigmaTel Introduces New High-Fidelity, High-Definition Audio Solutions for Notebook PCs23 August 2005
SigmaTel, Inc. (NASDAQ: SGTL), a global leader in analog intensive, mixed-signal integrated circuits for the portable consumer electronics and computing markets, today introduced a new family of High-Fidelity High-Definition (HD) Audio codecs allowing for digital microphone capabilities and the ability to implement audio and modem functionality directly on the PC motherboard. The new audio solutions, the SigmaTel STAC9202 and STAC9251 feature digital microphone capabilities and the STAC9250 provides support for the implementation of an audio-modem-on-motherboard (AMoM) solution when combined with the Silicon Laboratories (NASDAQ: SLAB) Si3080 Line Side modem Direct Access Arrangement (DAA) chip. The new High Fidelity HD Audio codecs enable notebook PC manufacturers to add advanced capabilities to their systems while keeping costs manageable.
The STAC9202 and STAC9251 make it easy for PC manufacturers and designers to design notebook computers with built-in digital microphones that improve voice input for applications such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone service, voice instant messaging (IM) and speech recognition. Digital microphones offer high-definition audio input and unlike analog microphones, do not require shielded cabling, reducing design complexity and assembly costs. The digital microphones are also smaller enabling optimal acoustic placement in the LCD bezel reducing noise present in typical analog microphone implementations. To develop a complete digital microphone solution, SigmaTel worked closely with digital microphone leader Akustica.

For even greater integration on notebook PCs, the STAC9250 and STAC9251 A-MoM technology enables designers to place the modem directly onto the PC motherboard, instead of as a separate component on a dedicated daughter card within the PC system.
The STAC9250 and STAC9251 audio codecs integrate modem interface technology from Silicon Laboratories. The integrated modem technology allows for a connection to the Silicon Laboratories DAA line-side device enabling an industry-leading audio plus modem combo chipset for the PC market. For designers implementing this solution in PC modem-on-motherboard applications, Silicon Laboratories' DAA technology offers the highest level of integration of external passive components, the smallest motherboard space requirements, the best modem surge and thermal performance, and the lowest overall modem solution cost. With the broadest field experience of any silicon DAA in the industry, the Silicon Laboratories' solution offers customers a highly reliable and easy to implement alternative to traditional but more costly modem daughter cards. The DAA is fully compliant with worldwide PTT, EMC and safety standards.
