Qwest Statement on the FCC's Pending VoIP 911 Decision

The following statement is attributable to Steve Davis, Qwest (NYSE: Q) senior vice president, public policy, regarding news accounts of Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin's pending decision on voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) 911.

"We commend Chairman Martin's recommendation that the FCC establish a deadline for VoIP providers to offer real 911 emergency services to their customers.

"Qwest takes great pride in provisioning E911 services to our existing VoIP customers, including Vonage. We're gratified by Vonage's acknowledgment of our leadership in our early and ongoing work with them.

"The safety and well-being of all customers should be the primary focus of the 911 VoIP debate. For more than a decade, Qwest has been an industry leader in providing its third-party providers, including retail customers, CLECs, wireless carriers, and now those entering the VoIP market, access to critical 911 systems.

"VoIP providers must treat E911 access as an integral part of the service they provide, and a necessary cost of doing business. Anything less is irresponsible."
