OneConnect and Telecom Ottawa join forces to deliver IP Multimedia communications services25 March 2005
OneConnect, the leading independent provider of hosted IP multimedia communications in Canada, and Telecom Ottawa, which operates North America's largest metropolitan 10 Gigabit fibre network, today announced they are launching a new suite of IP Multimedia communications services to customers in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario.
"We are proud to be the first Utility Telecom to provide this innovative Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) service to our customers in the public and private sector. While we certainly deliver the phone line replacement and long distance cost savings of other VoIP offerings, the benefits of our service go well beyond that," said Telecom Ottawa Chief Operating Officer Dave Dobbin. "We're turning IP telephone service into a tool that businesses of all sizes can use to improve their bottom line."
"Ottawa businesses now have the most affordable access to industry leading IP technology because of a new OneConnect and Telecom Ottawa partnership," OneConnect President Ron Dekker said. "Once again Telecom Ottawa is demonstrating its ability to provide network services with unprecedented business value."
The new offering features high-fidelity voice quality with near-zero latency thanks to Telecom Ottawa's all-optical network. Multiple redundancies make it more reliable than traditional telephone services. And customers will have access to a host of new communication services, including secure, unified voice messaging, file sharing, one-number service, collaboration and desktop video-calling, along with significant savings for long distance and conferencing calling.
"As a hosted solution, our services eliminate the ongoing maintenance and administration costs associated with traditional premises-based equipment," said Nicole Mumford, Vice President of Sales with OneConnect. "And Telecom Ottawa is the perfect partner to offer this kind of service because its high capacity all-optical broadband network was built VoIP-ready."
Customers are already enjoying these new services.
"The VoIP offering from Telecom Ottawa and OneConnect has proved to be the most cost-effective and reliable solution among other options for us," said Peter Van Dijk, Principal and Director of Consulting Services, Lumina IT. "What we needed was a superior quality solution that would be viable for a smaller company. Often small to mid-sized companies do not consider VoIP practical for them - but this solution gives us the benefits of advanced IP multimedia communications at an affordable price that suits us."
The first-to-market services include:
- A one-number, find-me-follow-me feature that allows customers to use a simple web-based interface to consolidate all their telephone numbers, such as home, office and cellular, into a single number. When someone calls that number, all the other numbers ring, with the call being routed to the first phone to be picked up. - A one-mailbox feature that eliminates the complexities of multiple mailboxes by having only one to serve all requirements, including email. Voicemail messages are sent as an email, and can be saved on the user's computer just like any other file. - A soft client feature that provides mobile work forces with the same functionality and ability to connect to the new services from remote locations as from the office.
The services are easy-to-use, plug-and-play solutions with no software or hardware installation requirements. Reliability has been ensured with complete backup in different cities.
"We are extremely happy with the easy to use VoIP offering from Telecom Ottawa and OneConnect," said Eric Kitchen, Senior Partner, ClearSummit. "This gives us the flexibility without a major investment in infrastructure. In particular we are very impressed with the unique find-me-follow-me and the one-mailbox features. It's great to have the office follow you on the road."
