Motorola Demonstrates Power of IMS to Deliver Converged Services Using Wireless Broadband Networks

29 October 2005

At WiMAX World Oct. 26-28 in Boston, Motorola Inc. will demonstrate the capability of Motorola's Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) solution to deliver Voice over IP (VoIP), end-to-end converged services and applications across today's broadband networks and emerging WiMAX access environments. For example, Motorola's IMS solutions, coupled with WiMAX, will allow operators who do not have last mile access to offerVoIP and IP- Centrex/PBX service for enterprises and residential customers.

Motorola, using its IMS core and market leading MOTOwi4(TM) Canopy(TM) solution, will demonstrate IP-based voice, video, conferencing services, unified messaging, ringback tones, and other SIP-based applications on multiple devices including Motorola's Ojo(TM) Personal Video Phone at booth #103. In addition, visitors can learn about Motorola's Mesh Networks technology and the role it will play in a WiMAX environment.

"The Motorola IMS solution is a central component of our seamless mobility strategy across multiple access environments including wireless broadband. Our IMS solution supports WiMAX, as well as other packet-based broadband networks like Wi-Fi, DSL and cable, and mobile broadband," said Raghu Rau, senior vice president, Global Marketing and Strategy for Motorola Networks. "This demonstration using Motorola's IMS core for voice and other IP applications is significant because it proves the ability to deliver a full suite of services over MOTOwi4 WiMAX broadband networks."

Motorola is developing a portfolio of MOTOwi4 solutions that includes an end-to-end WiMAX 802.16e access network, IP core, devices and professional services that utilize Motorola's existing businesses and solutions. The architectural design of the MOTOwi4 IP-based systems enable seamless mobility through the IMS core, tying together existing 2G and 3G cellular systems, circuit voice, and higher tier mobile broadband access services and applications.

With the Motorola IMS solution, operators benefit from a unified core network with common subscriber provisioning and billing, and the ability to deliver data rich, multimedia experiences to any end-user environment through transparent connections among cellular and wireless broadband networks and devices.

This convergence -- across both packet and circuit domains -- will let end-users experience multiple services in a single session as they move among various environments using fixed and mobile devices. So whether that is whiteboarding, downloading music at home or in a car, or Push-to-X applications, the IMS solution supports Motorola's vision of seamless mobility.

"The most compelling WiMAX networks host a variety of advanced applications and services that include telephony, multimedia, and seamless mobility," said industry analyst Chad Hart, director of Venture Development Corporation's (VDC) Telecom Practice. "Unlike many internet-access focused offerings, advanced WiMAX networks require an end-to-end infrastructure that includes an IMS-based core network, an array of end-user devices, and a broad portfolio of applications and services. Motorola is one of the few vendors that has the ability to offer a complete WiMAX solution."

The Motorola IMS, designed to be a robust and highly scalable carrier- grade system that enables convergent VoIP across multiple access domains and open interfaces to 3rd party applications servers, is currently in trial with multiple service providers. Early IMS implementations already are in commercial service being used to deliver Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC). Motorola currently has PoC solutions with 44 wireless carriers covering 33 countries and territories.
