Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Extends Vital Digital and Voice Network With LightPointe Gigabit Ethernet Outdoor Wireless10 October 2005
LightPointe, a designer and manufacturer of high-speed outdoor wireless products, today announced that Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), the world renowned hospital and cancer institute, has deployed the company's Gigabit Ethernet FlightStrata(TM) optical wireless product to extend high-speed network connectivity to a new office while providing seamless access to bandwidth-intensive digital imaging, research data and a wireless IP telephony system. The largest private cancer institution in the world, MSKCC is well known for employing state-of-the-art technology to deliver improved services to patients, physicians, nurses, researchers and administrators. "Wireless technologies are a critical component of our New York City facilities," says Patricia C. Skarulis, vice president of information systems and chief information officer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. "The center's advanced network includes VoIP, mobile wireless workstations, widespread WiFi coverage, PDA scanners and high-speed optical wireless links that connect buildings and facilities located on Manhattan's Upper East Side." Most recently, the center's expansion into additional office space created an immediate need for Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. Leveraging LightPointe, MSKCC's technology team linked the new office space with the campus-wide network via window-mounted optical wireless systems. For the network survey and installation, the MSKCC team enlisted Speed Wire Inc., a Floral Park, N.Y.-based wireless technology integrator with extensive experience in LightPointe's optical wireless solutions. Speed Wire had previously assisted MSKCC in installing secure 155 Mbps LightPointe optical wireless links. Facing a tight deadline and a demand for Gigabit Ethernet throughput, Speed Wire recommended LightPointe's FlightStrata product and conducted a window-to-window transmission test to demonstrate its performance (the product also operates from rooftops). The FlightStrata linkheads were installed behind windows and carrying live network traffic in less than 48 hours after testing was concluded. According to John Guy, senior network engineer for MSKCC's network infrastructure group, optical wireless solutions are an ideal and cost-effective way to provide high-speed, outdoor building-to-building connectivity in healthcare campus environments with multiple buildings, high-bandwidth requirements and ever-changing demands. "Our latest LightPointe optical wireless link delivers full-duplex throughput securely between two buildings without the need to lease expensive fiber-optic cable from a service provider," he says. The new FlightStrata seamlessly integrates with the institute's existing LightPointe FlightSpectrum optical wireless links that connect other campus buildings, including one housing a high-speed network between MSKCC's research scientists and peers at nearby Rockefeller University. In all cases, the optical wireless network extensions carry high-speed voice, data and digital imaging to the remote locations. In doing so, MSKCC provides campus-wide access to its IP telephony system, all-digital Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS) and other leading-edge technologies without incurring additional significant capital expenditures. "No other outdoor bridging technology beats optical wireless in providing highly cost-effective, Gigabit Ethernet connectivity in an urban environment," says Mike Connolly, director of sales at Speed Wire. "Ease of installation and trouble-free operation eliminates the interference, security and management challenges associated with other wireless solutions." Optical wireless eliminates prohibitive licensing fees, lengthy timetables and other metropolitan obstacles typically associated with leased lines alternatives such as T1s or fiber-optic cable. "More and more organizations, especially many in the healthcare industry, are using optical wireless to transmit a variety of data at ultra high speed," says Bob Preston, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at LightPointe. "In particular, hospitals and medical facilities prefer the inherent security of optical wireless, which uses beams of light and cannot be detected." A pioneer in the development of optical wireless solutions based on free-space optics (FSO) technology, LightPointe has deployed thousands of systems in more than 60 countries. The company's growing list of healthcare and global blue-chip customers includes Austin Radiological Association, CNN, DHL International, Nextel, China Mobile, Volkswagen and Toyota. In May, LightPointe unveiled the FlightStrata 100 XA, the first integrated Fast Ethernet optical wireless link combined with license-free 5.8 GHz radio frequency (RF) technology. Using its patented DualPath(TM) architecture, LightPointe provides intelligent network switching between optical wireless and RF functionality for unparalleled capacity, availability and distance.
About LightPointe LightPointe designs and manufactures high-speed outdoor wireless products for cost-effective bridging in enterprise and carrier networks. LightPointe's outdoor wireless solutions have earned high marks in enterprise networking installations for linking two or more buildings in classic LAN-to-LAN backbone connectivity with extraordinarily high-bandwidth from 100 Mbps up to 1.25 Gbps. LightPointe outdoor wireless solutions are unique in that they use optical wireless based on free-space optics (FSO) technology and are license-free worldwide. The company's patented DualPath architecture integrates auto-switching optical wireless as a primary path and license-free 5.8 GHz radio frequency (RF) wireless as a secondary and redundant data path for industry-leading 99.999 percent network availability and uptime. LightPointe products have been deployed in more than 60 countries, and the company is recognized worldwide for the highest standards of quality and service.
