Mass Migration to VoIP Expected Within a Decade Reports In-Stat2 May 2005
The international telecommunications industry is in the early stages of a migration to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), reports In-Stat (www.in-stat.com). The big question is when will a mass migration to VoIP occur? 2005-2009 is the consumer and small business VoIP ramp-up period, and migration to VoIP will peak in the 2010-2014 time frame, the high-tech market research firm says. This time frame is largely dependent on carriers' strategies for migration to the Next-Generation Network (NGN).
"A carrier's NGN migration strategy is heavily influenced by factors such as the cost of maintaining the Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN), available investment funds, technology, regulatory policies, pricing trends and competition," said Keith Nissen, In-Stat analyst. "Each carrier will develop its own unique NGN migration strategy."
Carriers around the world are developing migration strategies that include network optimization, next-generation overlays and PSTN replacement. These strategies will directly impact the type, quantity and timing of future equipment purchases. In-Stat has concluded that as VoIP competition and demand increases over the next five years, incumbent carriers will increasingly opt for PSTN replacement to lower operating costs.
The report, "Carrier NGN Migration Strategies Set VoIP Timing" (#IN0502435CT), profiles selected carriers, worldwide, to illustrate alternative network migration strategies. Business and market factors driving these various strategies are examined. Network migration strategies are forecasted for each incumbent operator, worldwide, leading to the quantification of global VoIP-enabled lines from 2005-2019. Based on this forecast, observations and conclusions of the VoIP market are presented.
