Level 3 Signs Multiyear VoIP Agreement With Patriot Media15 November 2005
Level 3 Communications (Nasdaq: LVLT) today announced that it is the exclusive underlying network provider for Patriot Media's new digital phone service called "Patriot Digital Phone." Patriot Media, a New Jersey based cable operator serving 115,000 households, launched its digital phone service in October 2005. Under the terms of the multiyear agreement, Level 3 is providing Patriot Media with (3)VoIP Enhanced(SM) Local service, which is used by cable operators, as well as carriers, Internet service providers and other companies eager to deploy a quick-to-market, cost-effective, regulatory-compliant IP voice solution. Included in (3)VoIP Enhanced Local service is a fixed-line solution for E-911 that includes network connections to public safety answering points (PSAPs) that serve approximately 68 percent of households across the United States. Level 3 recently enhanced its E-911 solution for IP voice customers, and continues to increase the geographic availability of its E-911 platform. Already operating one of the largest networks in the United States, Level 3 plans to extend its fixed-line E-911 coverage to more than 70 percent of households by the end of 2005. "Level 3 has been an integral partner and advisor to Patriot Media as we built and deployed our digital phone service for residential consumers," said Rob Roeder, vice president of network services for Patriot Media. "We recognized early on that Level 3 was and continues to be the enabler of advanced voice services that we wanted to work with to deliver our customers high-quality and reliable digital calling services." "We are excited that Patriot Media has chosen Level 3 as its VoIP provider. With its success across New Jersey, Patriot Media is a valuable, cable partner," said Rich DiGeronimo, vice president of local voice services for Level 3. "Our work with Patriot Media represents continued momentum with cable operators. We are now under contract to provide VoIP infrastructure to companies serving more than 40 million U.S. cable subscribers and five of the six largest cable operators in the nation. We look forward to becoming the leading enabler of cable phone services across the United States." (3)VoIP Enhanced(SM) Local Service The principal components offered by Level 3's (3)VoIP Enhanced Local service include network trunking, local telephone numbers, local number portability, the safety of E-911, operator assistance, caller ID, directory listings, and directory assistance. Forward-Looking Statement Some of the statements made by Level 3 in this press release are forward-looking in nature. Actual results may differ materially from those projected in forward-looking statements. Level 3 believes that its primary risk factors include, but are not limited to: developing new products and services that meet customer demands and generate acceptable margins; increasing the volume of traffic on Level 3's network; overcoming the softness in the economy given its disproportionate effect on the telecommunications industry; integrating strategic acquisitions; attracting and retaining qualified management and other personnel; successfully completing commercial testing of new technology and information systems to support new products and services, including voice transmission services; ability to meet all of the terms and conditions of our debt obligations; overcoming Software Spectrum's reliance on financial incentives, volume discounts and marketing funds from software publishers; reducing downward pressure of Software Spectrum's margins as a result of the use of volume licensing and maintenance agreements; and reducing rate of price compression on certain of the Company's existing transport and IP services. Additional information concerning these and other important factors can be found within Level 3's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Statements in this release should be evaluated in light of these important factors.
