Voice over Internet Protocol has been a disruptive technology waiting to happen ever since 1994, when the first attempt to send free phone calls over the internet was made. Once you have a broadband connection, VOIP is cheap.

Intervivo, founded by several of Britain's earliest internet folks, aims to make using VOIP as simple as plugging a telephone into an ordinary line. They don't quite go that far, but they make a pretty good job of it. The most complicated part is configuring your broadband connection to allow VOIP traffic through your firewall.

There are two ways of using the service: download software or install physical phone. The physical phone has all the features of any other phone - speaker, memory dialling, conferencing - but internally it is preconfigured with the information it needs to access Intervivo's VOIP server.

The software you download and configure yourself, though the instructions for doing so are straightforward and detailed. If you use the software, you will also need a headset to plug into your computer's sound board. Once you're set up you can call any phone in the world, whether it's a traditional landline, mobile or internet phone, and they can call you on an ordinary STD UK number.

The only restrictions are that you can't call emergency 999, operator services, directory inquiries or premium rate numbers. Call costs compare favourably with all plans except flat-rate national calling. Expect savings of as much as 50pc over BT.
