Germany's Netcologne selects Alcatel to offer competitive VoIP services2 August 2005
Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that NetCologne, one of the leading regional operators in Germany, has signed a contract for a voice over IP (VoIP) solution from Alcatel. The Alcatel solution will allow NetCologne to rapidly deploy enhanced voice services over its DSL and cable networks.
Since the company's founding in 1994, one of NetCologne's primary goals has been to strengthen the economic region of Cologne by providing innovative and affordable telecommunication services. As a facilities-based regional carrier with its own fibre optic network spanning more than 2,000 km, NetCologne is well positioned to offer its residential and business customers the most advanced and competitively priced broadband services.
Horst Schmitz, Technical Director of Netcologne commented, "Alcatel has been a trusted partner of ours for several years now. In an increasingly competitive market, the rapid delivery of new innovative services is a key success factor that will allow us to differentiate our services, expand our market reach and increase the average revenue per subscriber. The Alcatel solution enables our customers to enjoy new bundled voice services over their broadband DSL and cable connections and will be a key component in maintaining our competitive edge."
"NetCologne is one of the most successful regional carriers with strong brand recognition in Germany," stated Alan Mottram, President of Alcatel's fixed solutions activities. "With our proven NGN portfolio and expertise in delivering end to end solutions, Alcatel is ideally positioned to support NetCologne's objectives of expanding its market opportunity through service innovation".
The central components of Alcatel's NGN solution for NetCologne include the Alcatel 5020 Softswitch and Alcatel 7510 and 7515 Media Gateways providing the link between the worlds of voice and data. As the first softswitch to receive Euro-PacketCable qualification, the standard for IP based telephony over cable, the Alcatel 5020 Softswitch provides a flexibile and cost effective solution allowing NetCologne to deliver first or second voice line services over any access including broadband cable. NetCologne will use Alcatel's fully integrated voice over DSL gateway on Alcatel's 7300 Advanced Services Access Multiplexer ( ASAM ), to expand its services by offering additional voice lines over the same copper telephone wire used by subscribers for Internet access. The complete solution will be managed by the Alcatel 1300 Convergent Management Center ( CMC ).
