Founder of Intertex Among 'Top 100 Voices' of IP Communications Industry24 October 2006
Intertex has become renown in the international VoIP world for including full support of the SIP standard in its firewalls and ADSL-modems, a capability still missing in most competitors' products. SIP is the protocol for communicating over the Internet using voice, video, presence and instant messaging. IP-telephony, or VoIP, is just one example of a SIP based service.
As early as the late 1990's, Karl Erik Stahl realized that SIP would have problems working well through conventional firewalls and he has conveyed this message at many conference presentations and in several articles. This incapability of traditional firewalls to handle SIP is becoming more and more of a problem as multimedia communication over the Internet and the IMS solutions of the 3G carriers shall be offered to customers on protected LANs. Using Intertex' firewalls and ADSL-modems all users having a SIP address, can communicate with each other over IP, an obvious function that usually is not possible using other products. IP-telephony of today is instead often implemented in closed islands that only communicate with other islands' IP phones via the traditional telephone network (PSTN).
The products of Intertex, and the larger enterprise firewalls of the sister company Ingate, contain a SIP proxy and registrar which control the SIP communication through the firewall and which can also be used as a stand-alone SIP server. With these features the users on local networks can communicate with each other and with everyone in the open SIP world, using voice, video, presence, instant messaging and other interesting future services. Most other firewalls and NAT routers are lacking or have inadequately implemented support for SIP, therefore limiting the possibilities of SIP and requiring the use of unreliable and insecure work-arounds.
Intertex has recently released the SurfinBird IX68, a new generation of ADSL-modems with built-in router and full SIP support. The IX68 products support ADSL2+ and Annex M, which triple the speed in both directions compared to traditional ADSL. This product series also includes models with wireless access point and ports for using traditional phones for IP-telephony.
According to Rich Tehrani, TMC president and group-editor-in-chief, it is the efforts of the Top 100 Voices that have enabled the IP communications industry to flourish and grow for the past nine years.
"Our committee looked back over the course of the last decade, and came up with 100 people who we felt should be counted among the Top 100 Voices. Some were present at the beginning. Some are newer participants in our fast-growing market space. The common thread among all of the Top 100 Voices is that they played a part in the birth, growth and maturity of the IP Communications market, and -- carried upon the shoulders of this community -- the next generation of communications will evolve to heights we have yet to imagine," explained Tehrani.
"It is a pleasure and an honor being on this list together with so many leading persons within the SIP and VoIP world," says Karl Erik Stahl and continues "It is good and important that attention now is brought to the fact that standardized SIP communication must be handled by firewalls and routers. It is a ticking bomb that products incapable of relaying SIP communication to the LAN are still being sold and installed."
The list is the centerpiece of Internet Telephony magazine's landmark 100th issue, which is published this month.
