Evoxus and Huawei Launch Unified VoIP Network

8 April 2005

Uncontrollable and expensive telecoms costs, and poor bandwidth can now be confined to the history books. Evoxus has today announced that, in partnership with Huawei, it can now offer customers a unified, end-to-end, Voice over IP network.

Evoxus will be doubling the capacity of the existing Huawei SoftX installation at its Docklands site by installing an identical system at its Reading HQ. Furthermore, by deploying world leading ‘Dual Homing’ practice across the Reading and Docklands SoftX equipment, Evoxus will establish at the core of its network a fully resilient two-site solution. This combination of next generation datacoms based IP technology with interfaces back to the existing telephony world is the foundation of the company's core network architecture for the years ahead.

“We are witnessing a new industrial revolution as IP-based technologies change the way companies communicate,” explains Mark Lower, CEO of Evoxus. “We are currently working with a number of multi-sited corporates and organisations such as the Co-op to ensure a smooth journey to the ‘new world’ of IP communications. Customers are turning to IP, not because of the hype, but due to the immediate and tangible business benefits they can gain, including significant cost savings and improved productivity. But they realise that they have to work with companies that know how to make this new technology work which is where Evoxus and Huawei come in.”

William Xu, EVP Huawei Technologies comments: “The telecoms world has decided that the future is IP. Using the SIP standard, voice, multimedia and data will share the same network and the same interconnects between telecoms operators, whereas currently they are completely separate services and networks. Huawei provides the technology to be in the forefront of this new industrial revolution, and by partnering with Evoxus, we are at the leading edge of the cost and feature benefits that can be offered to customers.”

Providing a smooth journey to the ‘new world’ of IP communications involves integrating a variety of equipment, platforms and technologies to create one cohesive, efficient network with a state of the art IP Gateway to the ‘old world’. Evoxus can connect equipment via SIP open standards, and offer connectivity and minutes, whilst Huawei provides the soft switches and routers. Huawei has brought reliable, robust, scalable carrier grade switches and equipment to the UK which have already proven their worth in China and Brunei.

Once in place, the benefits of an IP network are many and varied:

Control and reduce costs
- Customer self provisioning reduces adds, moves and changes, conservatively saving £50 per year per user
- All ‘On-Net’ phone calls (peer to peer) are free of charge
- Fixed cost per user, allowing for simplified budgeting

Innovative new services
- Develop new services without reliance on vendors
- Rapid deployment of new ‘SIP’ applications

Interoperability
- Compatibility with legacy and next generation equipment
- Leverage new services with existing infrastructure

Mobility

One of the benefits of IP-telephony is that IP addresses refer to a specific device and not a location. This can be very useful for organisations which are geographically dispersed or employ home workers or sales teams who work away from the main office. An IP-based network makes it easier to stay in touch, allowing the right people to access shared information and network facilities wherever they are.

Editors Notes

Company History

Evoxus is the new trading name for EEscape in the business market. It is one of the fastest growing telcos in the country and the UK’s first true ‘IP generation’ communications company.

The company was founded in 1999 as the UK’s first genuine “E-telco” and was originally owned by BT. Following a Management Buyout in 2003, it is now privately owned and run by a management team steeped in telecoms expertise.

Evoxus prides itself on its friendliness and approachability. Its strength is in developing working partnerships with customers to identify cost saving opportunities and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their communications.

Evoxus is one of a new breed of telecommunications companies that has IP telephony and voice-data convergence capability at the heart of its offering. It takes its customers on a smooth journey, integrating IP with existing equipment to create one cohesive, efficient network. The company recently announced that it has become the first UK carrier to complete a PSTN interconnect from BT to a VoIP (Voice over IP) Carrier exchange.

The company has grown and developed, although it has always been true to its innovative traditions. Today, under the new brand of Evoxus, the company provides voice and data services to the business market whilst also providing wholesale services to resellers in the telephony market. Its customers range from small organisations to large multi sited corporate enterprises in a wide range of markets including banking and finance, distribution, retail, legal, travel and the public sector.

However, it is in the IP-arena that it is leading the way, with the ability to make ‘carrier grade’ IP telephony a reality…today. Evoxus takes a different approach in that it delivers integrated solutions via a managed service capability. It hosts the technology in its network which means that organizations do not have to invest in capital equipment or hire specialist people to make it work.

The company operates out of two main locations - Reading and London’s Docklands - and employs 70 people.

Technical overview

Each site has a high specification computer suite and accompanying office accommodation. A current generation Ericsson AXE10 public network switch is housed in each site, both of which are dual fed with fibre optic cables from multiple carriers. A Telsis Intelligent Network platform supports advanced number translation services (0845, 0870, 09xx) and other complex routing services.

The UK’s first true carrier grade Huawei Soft switch SX3000 was installed and operational at the Reading site in July 2003.

A second SX3000 complete with Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) compliant software has recently been installed (May 2004) at the Docklands site. The SX3000 passed BT interconnect testing in November 2004 and is the first full carrier class IP switch in Europe to be connected to the UK PSTN. The switch is currently supporting a number of beta trials of Hosted IP PBX, IP Centrex. Evoxus is using the trials to develop a full IP service for commercial launch in Q1, 2005.
