Ellacoya Raises Its Voice Boosts Voice-over-IP Application Support to Provide QoS on a Per23 December 2004
Ellacoya Networks(TM), Inc., a leading provider of intelligent bandwidth management solutions, today announced the availability of its new enhanced Voice-over-IP(VoIP) software package. The package, available with the company's 5.8 software release, inspects deeper into the SIP, H.323 and MGCP applications, enabling the Ellacoya IP Service Control System to identify, classify and prioritize these applications per subscriber and per VoIP provider. It gives broadband service providers the ability to automatically apply QoS, as well as obtain visibility and reporting data, for specific VoIP traffic on a per subscriber and/or per provider basis.
"By expanding support for these VoIP applications, we are enabling our customers to first understand the volume and demand for VoIP services on their networks and then use that valuable information in planning and implementing their own VoIP service strategies," said Ben Legault, Vice President of Marketing at Ellacoya Networks. "VoIP-aware functionality in the network, and the ability to prioritize by application and service provider, also provides significant flexibility in VoIP service delivery models for both large and small broadband service providers."
With the ability to detect and prioritize VoIP applications by subscriber and service provider, the broadband service provider can choose a service delivery model that best suits its needs. For example, once traffic from a non-facilities based voice service provider is identified, the provider could strike an agreement with the service provider to prioritize its traffic, or market QoS to the subscriber directly for service enhancement. A large provider rolling out its own VoIP service might guarantee QoS for its service, while leaving all other VoIP traffic untouched as currently done today.
"Ellacoya continues to add functionality that helps broadband providers to simplify management of the many applications on their networks and to guarantee service performance for specific subscribers and applications," said Lindsay Schroth, Senior Analyst at The Yankee Group. "Enhanced VoIP capabilities such as these add more intelligence to the network, and we see network intelligence as a priority for broadband providers as they evolve their business models to include application-based service revenue."
The Ellacoya System can directly prioritize VoIP traffic by being positioned in-line on the network; or in cable access networks from an off-line position by using the standards-based PacketCable(TM) Multimedia (PCMM) framework.
