Dutch cable operator Essent migrating to @ Home VoIP solution from Siemens3 July 2005
Dutch cable network operator Essent Kabelcom BV has commissioned Siemens to deliver, install and maintain an internet-based IP (Internet Protocol) platform. The new platform from the Surpass family will enable Essent to offer its customers a host of new applications such as fast internet connections and low-cost phone calls (Voice over IP). The Siemens platform will also enable the network operator, currently with more than 1.8 million cable connections, to realize its growth plans since it offers capacity for several hundred thousand new users.
The contract shows that Siemens has assumed a leading role in the Voice over IP field. The company was able to win this deal, which was also preceded by a successful field test, thanks to its experience and international references.
The new platform enables Essent to offer its customers new services such as broadband internet access and a wide range of digital television channels. Customers can also place phone calls and even video calls over the same network at very attractive prices. With the Siemens “Subscriber Self-Care” system, users can also select the features they want over the internet.
The platform will be installed in the cities Groningen and Tilburg, which will add redundancy to the network. The management system for the new platform will be set up in Zwolle.
Essent Kabelcom is an important player in the Dutch cable sector. It is active in the areas of telecommunications, data communications, radio, TV, and Internet, both for the consumer market and for the business sector. On a daily basis it reaches approximately five million people in the north, east, and south of the Netherlands through 1.8 million cable connections. Essent Kabelcom is the second largest cable company in the Netherlands. The company employs more than 1,000 people. In 2002 its sales were more than 343 million euros. Moreover, this company is the only large player in the sector that is fully Dutch-owned. @Home cabelinternet has more than 470.000 subscribers.
