D & E Communications Expands VoIP Calling Service Availability in Central Pennsylvania6 July 2005
D&E Communications (NASDAQ: DECC) has expanded the availability of its Jazzd Phone Service for Broadband in central Pennsylvania, adding local phone numbers in the State College, Bellefonte, Altoona and Williamsport markets.
Using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, Jazzd Phone offers unlimited local and domestic long distance calling, enhanced 911 service, the ability to receive and forward voice mail messages through e-mail, a website to control custom calling features, and D&E's own telemarketing call blocking service -- all for $29.99 per month.
Jazzd Phone is available to households that have high-speed Internet service. By plugging a D&E Jazzd Phone Adapter into a DSL or cable modem, customers can use their regular telephone to make and receive calls over their broadband Internet connection. The voice signal is converted to a digital signal that travels over the Internet.
Recognizing the importance of emergency calling, D&E has established enhanced 911 service with 14 counties in its target market in central Pennsylvania. Subscribers in these counties will be connected with their local Public Safety Answering Point when they call 911, and they also can set up an enhanced feature to provide their address to the PSAP when they call. This can allow emergency dispatchers to identify the phone's registered location if a 911 caller is unable to speak -- an advantage not available with many VoIP services.
D&E launched Jazzd Phone Service for Broadband in late April, with local phone numbers initially available in Lancaster, York, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Berks and Montgomery counties.
