Aventail EX-1500 SSL VPN Scores High Marks in Secure Enterprise Review

6 August 2005

The Aventail EX-1500 SSL VPN (www.aventail.com) scored high marks in a just-released product review by Secure Enterprise magazine. The Aventail appliance was noted for its market-leading unified policy and access control, endpoint security, and Smart Tunneling, as well as overall ease of use and management. The author also noted the strong growth forecast for the SSL VPN market as the number of mobile and remote workers continues to strongly increase.

The Aventail EX-1500 scored high across the board, from initial set-up through application access. "Aventail has added a set-up wizard for initial installation and configuration of the appliance… the wizard is particularly helpful when defining initial access rules and resources," the review stated.

- Access Controls and Policy Management

Beyond set-up, the reviewer particularly liked Aventail's approach to configuring access control rules.

"From the Access Control tab, we could edit the access control rules we set up during testing, a functionality often lacking in SSL VPN products. For example, we easily configured a new access rule and network resource and assigned them to users. This tab and its contents -- unique to the Aventail product -- saved us from having to click through various screens to determine what a user/group has access to."

Aventail Unified Policy reduces the time and amount of work for administrators, providing centralized administration with just one rule set for all resources and access methods. With the Aventail Policy Server, the administrator doesn't have to write separate access policies for different resource types or access methods, so establishing access rules is three times or more faster than other SSL VPNs, according to Aventail's lab testing.

- End Point Control with Policy Zones

Endpoint security features were tested extensively in the Secure Enterprise review, and again, Aventail technology outperformed the competition in key areas, most notably with its Policy Zones.

"Aventail does provide built-in, configurable device and zone profiles -- this is the true strength of its endpoint control product. We defined access rules based on the trust level for an endpoint and created multiple zone profiles, such as trusted, semitrusted and untrusted. This makes it easy to update security policies as users move about various business locations and roles within an organization," the review stated.

Aventail End Point Control allows administrators to set granular access rules based on the level of trust for an end point. The Aventail SSL VPN first performs a thorough client integrity check and then classifies the device into a Policy Zone based on the state of the device and user identity. Aventail's End Point Control also automatically deploys data protection, such as a virtual desktop session, if extra security is deemed required.

- Smart Tunneling

Aventail's recently-released Smart Tunneling technology also received notice.

"A key new feature in version 8.5 is Smart Tunneling, which takes advantage of Layer 3 connectivity with full application access combined with Layer 4 through Layer 7 policy control," said the reviewer.

There is no other tunneling technology like this on the market today, as Aventail Smart Tunneling is a patent-pending architecture that combines the power of SSL with true network transparency and universal application reach, including all UDP, TCP, IP protocols and back-connect applications such as VOIP.

Smart Tunneling overcomes the application reach limitations of a proxy and the policy and security limitations of IPSec technology to deliver one seamless solution that can be used for every kind of access. Importantly, Smart Tunneling is integrated with Aventail's centralized policy model.

The Secure Enterprise review validates analyst predictions that SSL VPNs are becoming the preferred protocol for all remote access. "An SSL VPN is our top choice for providing access to large numbers of mobile employees and for extranet environments," the review stated.
