Alberta Educators Choose Charter Telecom for Two Major High Speed Internet Contracts29 December 2004
Charter Telecom is pleased to announce that it has won two major new contracts to improve Internet access in Alberta's education system by combining its on-time, on-budget reputation with the latest Nortel technology.
The two contracts, together worth several million dollars, are with the Calgary Board of Education and the University of Calgary.
"Our close relationship with Nortel Networks has made it possible for our new clients to provide powerful improvements in online access to a wide array of people-from students, teachers, administrative staff to researchers and doctors-and still realize significant savings" said Paul Chandler, CEO of Charter Telecom. The Calgary Board of Education is upgrading its telecommunications equipment to take advantage of the higher bandwidth provided by the Alberta Supernet Project, allowing it to provide better Internet access to the city's schools, increase network functionality and reduce operating costs.
The University of Calgary is upgrading its telecommunications infrastructure to aid research in medical and academic areas, and will increase access to University medical research for Calgary-area doctors.
Both contracts take advantage of Nortel Networks' focus on the latest Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which allows customers to run both voice and data information on the same backbone, increasing flexibility and functionality while reducing operating costs.
For example, the University of Calgary will have the ability to integrate research and results and communicate this information better to the medical community, with the capacity to include data, audio, still images and video via the same infrastructure with no decrease in efficiency.
For the Calgary Board of Education, Charter is using Nortel Networks' wireless solution to provide broad network connectivity. The board will be able to provide new access points throughout its schools, but still manage security through a central location-a benefit no other company can offer at this point.
In less than a decade, Charter Telecom has acquired a reputation for overcoming problems and providing innovative telecommunications solutions. This past summer, together with partner NorthwestTel, Charter provided local dial-up Internet access across Canada's North, all the way to Grise Fiord, North America's northernmost community, just 1500 kilometres from the North Pole.
Established in 1996, Charter has grown quickly to become Nortel Networks' largest Enterprise Independent Data Business Partner in Canada, and the leader in converged solutions. In partnership with Nortel, Charter provides a broad range of Local Area Networking (LAN) and Wide Area Networking (WAN) applications that enable clients to meet their networking objectives, increase their competitiveness, reduce costs and compete effectively.
