ADTRAN Adds Cost-Effective ADSL ADSL2 Solutions to NetVanta Family

20 December 2004

The NetVanta 340 is the first member of the NetVanta 300 Series of business-class ADSL2+ routers. It offers a single ADSL network interface and one Ethernet interface. It supports ADSL (Annex A), ADSL2, and ADSL2+ for extended reach with bandwidths as high as 25 Mbps. Like all NetVanta routers, the NetVanta 340 is based on the ADTRAN Operating System (OS). The ADTRAN OS offers users a built-in IP router, supporting routing protocols like BGP, OSPF and RIP; an integral stateful inspection firewall to protect against Denial of Service (DoS) attempts; Quality of Service (QoS) for delay-sensitive traffic; SIP ALG (Application Layer Gateway) enhancements for VoIP; Network Address Translation (NAT); and DHCP server/client. All of this functionality is easily managed using a familiar Command Line Interface (CLI) or Web Graphical User Interface (GUI). With the purchase of the Enhanced Feature Pack upgrade, the NetVanta 340 can also support up to five simultaneous IPSec VPN tunnels using DES, 3DES, or AES encryption for added security.

"The NetVanta 340 is an economical, feature-rich solution that will allow carriers to remain competitive in the small and medium business (SMB) market," said Ian Cope, chief technical officer, DSLi. "This device allows carriers to extend their reach to more customers. With an advanced feature set, which offers functionality like a SIP ALG, customers can then take advantage of cost-effective voice and data services like VoIP, without sacrificing security, quality, or reliability."

The NetVanta ADSL NIM is compatible with all NetVanta 1000, 3000, and 4000 Series routers and switch-routers and brings added flexibility and versatility to enterprise-managed ADSL circuit terminations. Supporting the same ADSL standards as the NetVanta 340, the NIM offers a single ADSL interface and the option for dial backup via an analog or ISDN BRI plug-on Dial Backup Interface Module (DIM). The ADSL NIM can also be used as a secondary module in the multi-slot NetVanta 3305 and 4305 as a high-bandwidth disaster recovery link in the event of a primary link failure. Like the NetVanta 340, when used in a NetVanta chassis with the addition of the Enhanced Feature Pack software option, VPN capability is supported. It also provides a cost-effective means for customers to future-proof their hardware investment, by allowing migration, from ADSL to ADSL2 or ADSL2+ service, as it becomes more prevalent and without the purchase of a new hardware platform.

"Business-class ADSL is seeing substantial market growth as a cost-effective solution for high bandwidth applications such as Internet access or as a more cost-effective means for enterprise connectivity," said Tim Saunders, vice president of product management, ADTRAN Enterprise Networks Division. "These new NetVanta solutions are allowing carriers to have a broader reach into the business community, which allows enterprises to take advantage of the affordability and high bandwidth solutions ADSL offers. This is especially important in key vertical markets like retail and healthcare, where low-cost and higher-bandwidth access solutions are in great demand."

In addition to the announcement of these new hardware products, ADTRAN is also introducing version 8.1 of the ADTRAN OS. This release includes a number of new features for the entire NetVanta family, such as the BGPv4 routing protocol, ATM support for ADSL access, SIP ALG enhancements for VoIP traffic to traverse a NAT environment, and dynamic DNS client support.

NetVanta customers will also benefit from the release of the NetVanta Internetworking Essentials edition of n-Command(TM), an intuitive, scalable network management solution for NetVanta-based small- and medium-sized networks. The system aids IT administrators in daily network operation and configuration. n-Command offers the ability to backup and restore device configurations, push configuration changes, upgrade firmware to groups of devices, and print inventory reports for asset management. Comprehensive syntax verification for CLI scripts eliminates most typographical errors. A Windows Explorer-like interface provides easy navigation, allowing folders and sub-folders to be created for device grouping by type, location, or user preference.

The NetVanta 340 has a list price of $395, with an additional charge of $50 for the Enhanced Feature Pack upgrade for IPSec VPN support, while the ADSL NIM has a list price of $300. Both products are currently shipping. ADTRAN OS, v8.1 is also available on the ADTRAN website and can be downloaded free of charge for existing NetVanta customers. n-Command NetVanta Internetworking Essentials will be available beginning in January, supporting Windows(R) XP and Windows 2000 platforms, supporting up to 15 NetVanta devices. Customers can download the software free of charge from the ADTRAN website at: www.adtran.com/n-command. n-Command Enterprise Edition, will be released later this year, bringing added functionality and the ability to address larger networks.
